Kudu Hunting

One of the most recognizable species in Southern Africa is the Greater Kudu.  Hunting Greater Kudu antelopes are one of the most popular plains game species available in Africa to hunt.   Safari Club International recognizes there are actually 6 different sub species of Kudu:

  1. Abyssinian Greater Kudu (generally found in Mid-Eastern Africa)
  2. East African Greater Kudu (Mid – Eastern Africa),
  3. Eastern Cape Greater Kudu (A sub species of greater Kudu found in the Eastern Cape of South Africa and prized for its unique coloration),
  4. Lesser Kudu (A significantly smaller species than Greater Kudu – found from North East Africa to Tanzania),
  5. Southern Greater Kudu (Widely found across Southern Africa)
  6. Western Greater Kudu (found in a small area in North Central Africa).

JD African Safaris offers Eastern Cape and Southern Greater Kudu hunts in several different countries in Southern Africa.    To find the right hunting combination for your needs we suggest reviewing our  hunting packages!

A plains game hunt normally focuses around its prime objective and in many cases, this is the Greater Kudu.  When Greater Kudu hunting, the PH and hunter are working to locate a mature Kudu Bull with good curl in the horn and mass.

Why should I go on a Greater Kudu Hunt

Hunting a Cape Kudu or Greater Kudu is very challenging and exciting hunting. Kudu are quite intelligent and have excellent hearing and eyesight making them quite wary of any potential danger.  Kudu are taken after stalking on foot and initial contact with the animal can be quite close.  The Kudu is also a resilient animal and will put up significant resistance to being taken.  Hunters should be very well prepared for this hunt to go on for some time after the initial encounter as kudu are known to beat a quick retreat to thick bush after coming in contact with hunters.  As such the hunter should be in reasonably good shape to be able to follow tracks and get close to the animals.

What makes hunting the Greater Kudu unique

The Greater Kudu hunt is unique as it requires the hunter to stalk very close to an animal for the initial shot (or arrow).  This combined with the Kudu’s eyesight and hearing make it an excellent experience in the woods.  The excitement of seeing the horns of the kudu or the ears flick will be engrained in your memory banks for years to come.
